France holds a special place in our hearts. It is a very influential country, creating many important leaders and helping make important political and historical decisions. We have come to France seven times – to Paris five times and Nice and Cannes once each – and not just because it is a beautiful place to visit. Since FINAT’s inception, we have had a strong connection and partnership with UNFEA and its members.

After founding FINAT in 1958, Frenchman Andre Strauss led the small group of about 40 converters and industry representatives until 1971. Although his business was the Archer Contact company, he made FINAT his hobby. Pressure sensitive material was new and most companies had a mixed structure. Although the young association could only offer a limited number of activities and the language barrier was enormous, Strauss managed it. Often translating by himself, he held his group together and achieved success in basic technical activities and tests.

Strauss’ own words show his love for FINAT… “I very much felt FINAT to be my baby and I wanted to give the association maximum support for its survival and growth.” In 1969, Strauss met Mans Lejeune and was impressed with the services he was prepared to offer FINAT. However, there was one small problem. FINAT had no money. Mans Lejeune agreed to start work mid-1969 and wait for payment until the new membership fees came in 1970, and the deal was made.

With this short story from the past, we want to spotlight what you have in France with UNFEA, and what we have with FINAT on a European and International level. Associations exist for their members, but are only successful through active participation. We hope our little story motivates you to be an active member of UNFEA. It is an enormous workload to manage UNFEA, keep together the whole family of printers and suppliers, and continue the good work they do. Never forget what it takes for the board and leaders to offer you these services – the fun, connections, networking and open doors. Attendance is not enough. Make UNFEA your hobby like Strauss made FINAT his.

Whether you’re a conventional UNFEA member or on the board, FINAT thanks you for the time you spend. We wish you and the entire pressure sensitive industry in France the best. In the words of German politician Günther Oettinger, “Whatever you do, try to conserve peace in your business and in the world.”
